General information regarding braking systems The most common form of braking system fitted to trailers in use today is the mechanical overrun system. A trailer with a maximum gross weight of up to 750kg or half the curb weight of the towing vehicle does not require a braking system. On overrun braked trailers the maximum gross weight must not exceed 3500kg, this being dependant however on the particular towing vehicles recommended maximum towing weight. If brakes are fitted to a trailer they must be in working order even where brakes are not compulsory. The overrun braking systems on trailer since 1989 have a legal requirement to be of auto reverse type. This mechanism inside the brake drum senses when the trailer is going backwards and the normal forward braking mechanism is overridden. To ensure efficient operation of the brakes when the trailer is parked the handbrake mechanism has any energy store fitted either by means of a spring box or gas strut. Experience shows that brakes are the most common source of problem on trailers, often being the adjustment. Setting of brakes and couplings is very important and, incorrectly carried out work can therefore render the whole system inoperable. Briefly, there are four key areas of importance: coupling, back plate, compensator and linkage. Adjustment is started at the back plate, working forwards through the system via linkage to the coupling. Different manufacturers have their own back plate adjustment operation and settings, therefore identification or knowledge of make is essential. Typical makes include Alko and Knott shown above. The information above is a general guide, please contact us should you have any queries.
